When Bill joined the SFC wellness center in 2010, he could barely walk a mile without getting winded. With the help of SFC VP of Wellness Frank Ondus and his staff, Bill is 100 pounds lighter and off blood pressure medication. He follows a strength training regime developed just for him, and began cycling. For more background on Bill and his South Franklin Circle wellness success story click here.
July 14, 2013 Ten days to go…
It’s Sunday, ten days before the cycling time trials start in the National Senior Games. The Opening Ceremonies are Friday night July 19–five days from now. I’m feeling pretty good about my training and level of fitness for the games. I will be ready. This week I have two more intense workouts then just I’ll just taper down and rest up for the competition. My coach tells me that I’m right on schedule and should be in peak form for the Games. I hope I do well, but I keep reminding myself that there are a lot of guys that are very fast and I’m very new to this sport. All I know is this: I will do my very best and if anyone is faster than me then good for them.
Above: Bill is interviewed by WKYC TV 3 in the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation, the site of the Senior Games Cycling Time Trials competition.
During the last week or so, Cleveland area media outlets seemed to have discovered me. The Chagrin Valley Time had a feature article. Chagrin Valley Magazineinterviewed me the other day for inclusion in a story. David C Barnett of radio station WCPN 90.3FM interviewed me last week, and I have an interview with WKYC TV on Monday (tomorrow) and Radio Station 92.3 The Fan has scheduled an interview for Monday, July 22.
The National Senior Games just posted the start times for the time trials. My starting time each day (Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25) is at 11:54am. I will be one of 62 competitors in the 60-64 age group contesting the 10K and 5K time trials.
Last week I was training on the Nationals course in the Rocky River Reservation. The Metroparks had closed the road to cars. A road repair crew was out on the course patching pot holes, and there were many to patch. This is a very positive development as the surface of the time trial course was not very good for racing. These repairs will make it much better.
I invite you all to come down to the National Senior Games Time Trials on Wednesday and Thursday, July 24 and 25, at the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation. The race headquarters will be at the South Mastick Picnic Grounds. There will be approximately 400 cyclists from across the country, ranging in age for youngsters of 50 years old to incredible athletes in their 90s. The time trials start at 9:30am and run through 2:30pm each day.
