Havens starts with the origins of Jazz in New Orleans in the late Ninteenth Century, the city’s early bands, then progresses to Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, The Great Clarinetists and ends with the New Orleans Revival in the 1930s and ’40s. He will augment his lectures with recordings of Jazz greats from his extensive music collection.
“I want students to gain an appreciation for traditional Jazz,” says Havens who advocates for keeping the legacy of traditional Jazz alive. “It’s as American as baseball and the Constitution.”
