“One of the reasons we moved here was that we knew about Crane House, and the rehabilitation services they provide,” says Carol, a retired administrative assistant. “But we had no idea we would need it so soon.”
The Crane House Health Center offers South Franklin Circle residents top-notch medical care with a focus on rehab, and is adjacent to the community center’s warm water pool and fitness studio.
While Don was able return to his own home after only five days in the hospital, the stroke had caused extensive damage to his speech centers.
“He was only able to make very minor motions with his lips and tongue,” Carol recalls, “and was unable to form even simple words. It was very hard for him. We had always been so active, and being unable to speak was quite a blow.”
Heartache gave way to hope, however, as Don began intensive therapy through Crane House, with licensed speech and language pathologist Lusi Radan.
Lusi and Don worked together for nearly a year; several times in the beginning, when it was necessary, therapy was provided in the comfort and privacy of Don’s own home.
“I simply cannot say enough about Lusi,” Carol says. “She has helped Don so much. When they started, she was working with him four days a week; as his recovery continued, it was reduced to three and then two days a week, plus exercises for him to do alone. And between Don’s determination and her caring, Lusi brought him to the point where he can talk again. He speaks slowly, but it’s been great progress!”
Better still, Don is once again able to enjoy many of the amenities that brought him to South Franklin Circle in the first place. “We go to hear speakers together now, and Don takes water aerobics several times each week,” says Carol. “Even if he can’t say a lot, there is still a lot for him to do here.”
For Carol, there has been another benefit to being part of the Judson community: the support she received from her neighbors in the aftermath of Don’s stroke.
“They had made us feel right at home from the moment we moved in,” Carol says. “And the night of Don’s stroke, when the ambulance came, they all just came streaming out of their doors to see how they could help. They were all so supportive, they just couldn’t do enough for us. They helped me with everything, from taking care of the dogs to answering my phone.”
A little more than a year after Don’s stroke, life is finally returning to normal. “Other than his speech, Don is really back to 100 percent. We are doing everything we did before the stroke, all the things we enjoy.
“And,” she adds, “I have to tell you, the people here are really something. We are so happy here, we just can’t say it enough!”
