Daughter Says Artist-in-Residence Program Connects Mother with Her Love of Music

Goldie Montgomery enjoyed a prolific career as an opera singer in Cleveland during the 1950s. One of the gowns she wore when performing for visiting dignitaries is now part of the Western Reserve Historical Society’s permanent collection. She also studied at the Cleveland Music School Settlement.

When the time came for her family to look at assisted living options, Judson Manor was the perfect fit.

“The artist-in-residence program, where Cleveland Institute of Music students live at Judson Manor, was a huge pull given mom’s background” says daughter K. J. Montgomery. “It reminds her of the students she taught. She may not be able to read music anymore, but it still moves her. It connects her past with her present.”

K.J. appreciates that her mom could personalize her apartment at Judson, bringing both her doll and teddy bear collections. “The amazing staff went out of their way to make her feel welcome,” she says. “As she adjusted to the environment, they gently encouraged her to attend programs, also respecting her need for privacy.”

“Knowing that she has options and choices, it’s her world now and she couldn’t be happier!”
